Cost of an Appraisal

old wooden chest with decorative carving
Late 17th century storage chest, walnut with carved detailing inspired by 17th century print sources

Our goal is to provide good value and excellent service at a fair price.  Good value means a high-quality product to the specifications of the type of appraisal within a reasonable time frame.

The first step in providing a bid is to completely understand and agree on the scope of work.  Scope of work begins with inspecting, measuring and photographing each item.  Preparation of the appraisal report then involves researching relevant markets, organizing photographs and other material, and writing and printing the final report.

Typically, bids are based on the number of items to be appraised. In some circumstances, there may be a discount for additional works by the same artist.  In some cases, it is appropriate to bid on an hourly rate, but our preference is to bid each job based on scope of work.  We like to keep communication open, and if in the course of doing an appraisal, changes of scope can be easily accommodated by mutual agreement.

We have never had a disputed bill, and intend to keep it that way.  We have a large and proud collection of “thank you” notes from clients who have been completely satisfied with our service. We want to continue that record with all current and future work.

Please contact us with any inquiries.
